Freedom Tower: forgotten already?

Construction crews ceremonially broke ground yesterday (the actual work — relocating some utility lines — started a few weeks ago) on Freedom Tower, the 1,776-foot commercial tower to be built adjacent to the former World Trade Center site.

But you may not have known that.

The event got very little mainstream press coverage. I stumbled upon it almost as an afterthought on MSNBC.com’s website yesterday.

Hell, I started looking around at other discussion sites, blogs, et cetera, looking to see what people had to say about the start of the construction. I haven’t found anyone else talking about it yet.

Sure, it got covered a little… but I’d have thought that the start of this new tower — the start of a defiant rebuilding of that which terrorism took from us — would be something that would make front-page news. Evidently, such things are just not that important anymore.

  • The USA is not like other countries. We will mourn the loss of something until we are to wrapped up in our daily lives to care. The first few years after the Oklahoma Bombing there was constant rememberance and prayer services, the park buil in rememberance is rarely mentioned. The first two years after 911 it was a big hype this past september I don't remember it being mentioned at least not in any major capacity. Even the world war II monument was a big deal when they were trying to raise money, but now that the have the money you never hear anything about the progress, hell I'm not even sure they finished building the thing. But I guess thats what monuments are for, to stand there for the people who need them.

maybe nationalism is starting to make even the press puke...
  • Here here. MSM's idea of "journalism" is a joke nowadays. Gone, it seems, are the days when the news companies and network news departments were in it to report news. The name of the game is ratings, which means the name of the game is money. They're telling us what (they think) we want to hear, so their ratings will go up.

  • Rush Limbaugh turning himself into authorites was a much more entertaining story. What, you think mainstream media has anything to do with "journalism" anymore? You wonder why I really don't want to work in the field anymore.
