A Note to the Media

Fidel Castro made headlines again yesterday by actually having his brother take his place as leader of Cuba (albeit temporarily).

RedState notes that the media has, of course, started mentioning — as they often do when questions about Castro’s health start to arise — that he’s outlasted some number of US Presidents (10 this time around). They do also point out, however, that there is a really good reason why Castro has survived so long: our Presidents step down when their terms are over.

  • Show me the name.

I want to see the name of someone who's been thrown in prison unjustly because of the USA PATRIOT Act.

  • Well, the US spies on its citizens, and you can be thrown in prison indefinitely under the Patriot Act, so...
  • If I had to choose a dictatorship to live under...

Me, I'd just as soon stay here in the States, and not live under a dictatorship at all.

  • Some journalism students from my school went to Cuba back in 2004 and did a report. It's not as bad over there as, say, North Korea. I'd say conditions there are closer to that of Mexico. And they apparently have some very nice tourist resorts there that you can go to, unless you're American, of course(one of the reasons it's a hot tourist destination is because there aren't any annoying Americans there). But, the difference between Cuba and Mexico is that, in Cuba, you have soldiers on every street corner, and they will follow you for seemingly no reason at all if they feel like it. Cubans aren't allowed in the tourist hotels where foreigners stay unless a) the work there or b) they're accompanied by a foreigner staying at said hotel. And the hotels have hidden cameras in every room. If you're Cuban, it's a scary place to live, because people really do "disappear" for speaking out against the gov't. If I had to choose a dictatorship to live under, though, I'd choose Fidel over Kim Jong-Il, because I think Kim is crazier, plus he has nukes.
