Things you’re not supposed to notice on TV…

(to borrow from Slashdot: from the suspension-of-disbelief dept.)

I’m a few weeks behind in watching Jericho, so I’m using part of the weekend to catch up.

This episode is too old to be much of a spoiler issue, but I’ll cut it just in case.

Outside an Internet cafe, five days after nuclear explosions are reported in a number of cities in the US, Lisa Whalley sees Skylar Stevens (both teenage girls) typing away at a laptop computer, but the computer is stuck at an IE “This page cannot be displayed” error.

Lisa: “Hey, Skylar! Any luck?”

Skylar: “No. I really need to check my email, I mean, my parents could have tried to contact me from New York.”

Lisa: “Well, have you tried typing a straight IP address?”

Skylar: “A what?”

Lisa turns the laptop toward her, types some numbers in the address bar, and presses Enter. The laptop just beeps.

IP Address 1 IP Address 2

Lisa: “That’s weird…”

Skylar: “What?”

Lisa: “Well, the Internet was built by the military. It’s supposed to survive a nuclear war.”

We’ll ignore the mild inaccuracies about the origin of the Internet, but I don’t think the Internet succumbing to a nuclear blast is really their problem.

You see, 027.750.304.001 isn’t a valid IP address.

  • What's really odd, is that they went through the effort to make it have the 4 sections to the number, but then screwed the rest up? It would be really clear, if typing in the IP still meant it was broke (because it would be a sure-fire way to make the browser always come up as broke) ... but to make it work?

I guess the only thing I can think of, is that it's like people on TV and movies using a '555' phone number ... Maybe the writers of the show are smarter than we think ;)
  • Yeah, I was going to go back and elaborate on all that, but you about covered it. :)

I'll point out all 4 numbers need to be between 1 and 0 and 255. The first number cannot be a 0, and you do not pad the nunbers to 3 disigts as they did. But hey i'm a computer engineer what do I know about IPs?
