Took you long enough.

Last January (2006), Rochester mayor Bob Duffy cancelled the ferry service that was running between Rochester and Toronto, citing $10 million in losses over 10 months of operation. In May, he announced that a firm from England — Euroferries, Ltd. — would be purchasing the ship, pending the acquisition of funds. Other principles were interested, but weren’t offering as much money. The difference was, though, that the other groups had money in hand. Ten months later, the situation hasn’t changed — Euroferries is still attempting to raise funds.

Mayor Duffy has finally said what a lot of Rochester’s residents have been saying for a while now: enough is enough.

Unless Euroferries is able to come up with what they need by the end of the weekend, Rochester will be talking to one of the other principles and getting the ferry sold.

Granted, I miss having the ferry there, but if it’s not going to be running, no reason to keep incurring expenses over it. I’d love to see a smaller, leaner ferry that was less costly to run, and less expensive for customers to ride.
