New York to issue drivers licenses to illegal immigrants

Our governor had a brilliant (in his mind, anyway) idea.
New York State is no longer going to require social security numbers to get drivers licenses.
This is so unbelievably stupid of an idea that it’s almost beyond words.
This plan is supposedly going to help improve the number of insured drivers and prevent accidents. But it won’t stop there.
A driver’s license gets you on airplanes.
A driver’s license gets you a bank account.
A driver’s license gets you a credit card.
A driver’s license gets you into a voting booth.
One rationalization from defenders of Spitzer’s plan is that it protects immigrant rights. But this is, of course, BS. Legal immigrants have the right to obtain Social Security numbers.
Illegal immigrants don’t have the right to drive.
This is largely because illegal immigrants don’t have the right to remain in the country. Note how that word “illegal” is in there. Wonder why they’d call it that… oh yeah, it’s because entering this country outside of proper channels and overstaying a visa are both against the law.
I have no problem with the additional security and technology features being introduced to prevent license document fraud, but their presence doesn’t counteract the need for the license to demonstrate not only that the holder is a resident of the state, but a legal resident of the state.
I don’t get it.
How can it not be obvious to the most casual of observers that this is a disaster in the making?
