American Idol 2/12 (liveblogged!)

Hollywood here we come!

  • Two hour show tonight? Oh dear. I’m going to need more food.
  • 164 seems like a small number, but it’ll get even smaller soon.
  • New twists, eh? Interesting new elimination system.
  • Brooke White sounded great in her first round, how will she do tonight?
  • Instruments? Nice touch.
  • Damn, she sounds awesome. I don’t know the song, don’t know if there are any pitch issues. She’s through, though.
  • Lorena Pinot sounds like mediocre karaoke tonight. Not so hot.
  • Amy Flynn hit a weird note there…
  • Leo Marlowe forgot his lyrics, methinks.
  • Alisha Dixon sounds way out of key.
  • Michael Sanfilippo sounded okay until the guitar kicked in.
  • Alyssa Coco is from nearby Penfield, a Rochester suburb. This performance didn’t sound so good.
  • Shaun Barrowes was out of key, too, though the piano was okay.
  • Jake Mellema took off with the drum kit. Sounded okay to me, not real spectacular. Did well with the multitasking, though.
  • I don’t remember David Hernandez’s audition, but he does great first day in Hollywood. Paula is obviously impressed, as is Randy. Three yeses.
  • Amanda Overmyer, the rock-and-roll nurse, has been through a rather wild ride recently, and will be performing, though she won’t pass through an airport metal detector at the moment with staples in her head…
  • She sounds pretty good on stage; I’d be interested to see what she’d do with different styles of music.
  • Uh oh… lyrical failure. Bad. Kills otherwise good performances dead, as seen at this point in the episode.
  • o/` kill me nowwww! o/`
  • I’d rather not hear about Ghaleb Emachah “tuning his instrument.”
  • I’m not feeling his singing tonight, either. Sounds flat.
  • Oh dear, here goes the party crew that made it through this round.
  • Josiah Leming pulls off a rare feat — not sounding completely and hideously off-key in a falsetto.
  • Danny Noriega is the last one we saw last week, and he hits out of the park again.
  • Ramiele Malubay, Carly Smithson, Michael Johns… all great.
  • The cuts are coming…
  • Kung Fu Panda?
  • David Cook sounds good, but unremarkable at first. The audition improves as it goes.
  • A string of auditions doing Byran Adams… Robbie Carrico, Jessica Brown, Perrie Cataldo, Syesha Mercado, and Colton Berry all try “I Do It For You,” with mixed success.
  • Kyle Ensley looks like a nerd, but he’s got a voice. Clay Aiken, take two?
  • The cuts begin… after the break.
  • “It’s gonna be a bloodbath…” I hope not literally… *gulp*
  • Brutal is right. Literally no safety net, and a weak start will kill ya.
  • Suzanne Toon doesn’t do much for me, but the judges may think otherwise.
  • Perrie’s back, apparently with an explanation, and sounds a lot better this time.
  • It wasn’t enough, though. Both are done.
  • Let’s hope Amy does a little better this time through. Jumping out on a limb with a brand new song… and leaping off, I fear. She’ll be back, I hope, though. She’s got talent, just needs more experience.
  • Reusing a song we only just a few weeks ago heard can’t be a good sign…
  • Jeffrey Lampkin sounds pretty good to me. His sister was already cut in the morning.
  • Man… Angela Martin lost her dad just weeks before auditioning in Hollywood. Sounds good in her last-chance run.
  • Not enough from Angela, apparently, but Jeffrey’s through.
  • Rochester’s Alyssa Coco gets called out and cut from the last group as well. I hope she comes back next year too.
  • David Archuleta sounds great, both on day one and with the band. Randy looks like he’s gonna cry. :-P
  • Kyle’s back again, and sounds pretty good to me.
  • Jeffrey falls apart, missing some lyrics.
  • Joey Catalano sounds just kinda okay, but not bad for having had a migrane. Not enough to stay, though.
  • Syesha’s back, saving her voice… apparently to good effect. I’m likin’ it.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody from Michael? This could go well, or not… his voice suits the early part, the question though, is how far into the song do they go?
  • They cut him off before faster part of the song, and let him through.
  • Uh, those locals I’d just as soon not see.
  • O noes! Carly’s allergic to the dog! :(
  • Ooo, I like this song from her, though. Way better than her first Season 7 audition. Three yeses.
  • Asia’h Epperson sounds great again, as does Brooke Helvie, at first… but messes up at the end.
  • That rarely happens… Simon gave Brooke a yes, but Randy and Paula shot her down. It’s usually the opposite.
  • Josiah isn’t doing well, it looks like. The stress and pressure are starting to crack him. He’s going to bed with little or no rehearsal and doesn’t sleep long either.
  • Ballsy. He’s calling off the band, as he hasn’t been able to rehearse with them.
  • I’m not that impressed. I don’t think he’s going on.
  • WOW. Making it through on the strength of previous performances. Did NOT see that coming. I could have sworn he was done. I only have six words… “you lucky son of a bitch.” :-P
  • We’re down to 50, and 26 are about to go home.
  • Bicker bicker bicker…
  • Oh, you’re cutting it off now???

Okay, I thought I had the scheduled pegged for a final 24 tonight, and a best-and-worst-of show tomorrow. Tune in tomorrow for the final 24.
