American Idol 2/13

Tonight, we reveal the Top 24… probably with more drama and timefill than ever before!

  • Unnecessary Jumper cross-promotion.
  • “American Idol”: fates decided while you dine!
  • Simon doesn’t look happy with some of the choices.
  • The long walk from the elevator has to be the toughest part. You have to look at the judges the whole way there.
  • First in, first out. Ronald Hodge doesn’t make it. Neither do Nina Shaw, Mycale Guyton, or Lisa Aukerman.
  • People seem worried that no one has been picked yet, but you’d think this should make them happy — the fewer spots are taken, the more spots are available for those yet to go upstairs. Each person coming downstairs without a finalist position is someone who didn’t take your seat.
  • Carly Smithson should be a lock.
  • I still don’t know if I want to know what made several contestants’ tongues blue during Hollywood Week.
  • Simon’s scribbling something while Paula and Randy are talking.
  • Jesus, Paula, stop dragging her along and tell her!
  • She’s in! We have our first finalist!
  • David Cook is in first for the guys.
  • Amanda Overmyer was at risk of being pigeonholed as a rocker with just one voice and style, but she makes it through.
  • Brandon Green, Amanda Hawkins, and Buck Smith all get cut.
  • David Archuleta gets tortured by Simon for a bit to make sure he’s not going to crack under the pressure, and makes it in. Four (two and two) are in the field.
  • Kristy Lee Cook has had some rough spots in Hollywood Week, but is finalist number five.
  • They didn’t show the flub up on Brooke White’s first-day audition in last night’s show, did they?
  • Brooke is number six. Four women and two men are in so far.
  • Danny Noriega was stellar from his first audition on, and makes it in too.
  • Jason Castro, Luke Menard, and Alexandrea Lushington (to her surprise, it seems) all make the cut. Five women and five men are in.
  • Ramiele Malubay looks nervous as hell. She’s happy to discover she’s female finalist number six, number ten over all.
  • Shaun Barrowes and Lorena Pinot fail to qualify, as does Drew Poppelreiter, who now will be able to get out for turkey season back home. :-P
  • Natasha Block gets to go home to her family.
  • Australian Michael Johns seems to be another lock, I’d think.
  • It occurs to me to go back and count how many people were cut so far, too. With twelve of each gender to make the cut for a total of 24, we’ve seen twelve women so far, going 6-6. Not counting Michael yet, we’ve seen ten men, five of whom have qualified. Both groups batting .500 so far.
  • Michael is number 6 for the men. Half the field is set.
  • Yeah, Micheal is going to have real serious “first world” problems, if his biggest issue is that he has to get people to vote for him.
  • Syesha Mercado had problems with hoarseness and nearly lost her voice, but saved it for a crucial time. Was it enough?
  • Paula tries to tease her with spelling to sneak through a “yes”.
  • I’m confused on Robbie Carrico’s result. He makes it in, though Simon hints that it wasn’t a unanimous vote. Paula seems to insist she voted for him too, but Simon keeps saying “the guys are behind you”. Not quite sure what that all means, but he’s in.
  • The women have let through seven out of 13; the guys have let through seven out of eleven. Five of each left to go. We’ve seen 24 contestants, and 14 have been been let through.
  • Garrett Haley makes it in, as do Kady Malloy, Chikezie Eze, Amy Davis, Alaina Whitaker and Jason Yeager. 30 down, with 20 admitted. Two spots left for each of the men and women, with, apparently, 20 contestants left to see. We should see a long string of rejected contestants here.
  • Asia’h Epperson went through a lot with losing her dad just a day or two before her audition. She’s in, though. One woman to go.
  • David Hernandez’s decision wasn’t unanimous, they say. It sounds like Simon wasn’t as in on it as the other two judges. He gets through, too. 32 down, 22 admitted.
  • Josiah Leming, who probably should have been cut at the end of the Hollywood auditions, gets scrubbed here. Pretty much everyone who gets called upstairs at this point is going to get let go until we’re down to the last two of each gender. We’ve seen this part before.
  • Josiah gets some support from the other contestants as he makes the walk out.
  • Aaaaand we’ve fast forwarded to the last four. Apparently they either didn’t start with a full fifty tonight, or they didn’t show every cut.
  • Colton Berry and Kyle Ensley are the last two guys. Both of these guys were really good, and neither decision was unanimous. The position goes to…
  • Colton. Simon believes Kyle should have made it, but doesn’t go through this time. We should see him back next year without a doubt. He seems in a great mood about it, anyway.
  • Cardin McKinney and Joanne Borgella are the final two women. Same deal, both auditioned really well, though Cardin doesn’t feel like she was her best.
  • Unanimous decision this time… the winner is…
  • Joanne. Cardin needs to come back again next year, too.
  • Simon makes a weird comment about the two women being in the elevator together.
  • Here’s where we show the other cuts that got missed. No names shown, unfortunately.
  • I question the idea a lot when people who get cut early on in the auditions say they’re going to keep singing, as many of them really aren’t that good. But if you’re getting this far, you’ve got talent without a doubt. Unless there’s some unknown reason not to, all of these contestants should continue their careers and do really well in music in some form.
  • They run down the roster of the top 24. Live shows start next week!

Not that my comments are likely to influence anyone, but I’ll be doing my best to liveblog my comments on the live episodes over the rest of the season. Being an iPhone owner, I’m also now an AT&T Mobility customer, and get the advantage of being able to text my votes in instead of having to deal with the phone system, which will be an awesome change of pace.
