American Idol 2/20 (Delayblogged!)

I’m late getting home due to a poker game, but there’s still voting window left, so I’ll blog this as I go. Top 12 women tonight!

  • Flu season is in effect! DUN DUN DUNNNNN!
  • More 1960s music tonight.
    1. Kristy Lee Cook – “Rescue Me” – Something sounds weird about it, I don’t know whether it’s flat or off tempo. Doesn’t sound obviously horribly bad or anything, but something doesn’t sound right.
    2. Joanne Borgella – “I Say A Little Prayer For You” – Starts really rough and off key, and doesn’t get all that much better. The entire song sounded flat to me. Probably a lot of nerves behind it.
  • Paula brings balance to the universe? I’m terrified…
    1. Alaina Whitaker – “More Today Than Yesterday” – We heard this from Chikezie yesterday, but more R&B. Alaina brings back more of the sound of the original Spiral Staircase song. Sounds a smidge rough at the beginning, but quickly brings it together and sounds great at the end.
    2. Amanda Overmyer – “Baby Please Don’t Go” – The rock-and-roll nurse is going to shy away from Joplin in the future. Sounds okay, but doesn’t really showcase a lot of range at first. The scat soloing helps a little, though the last half sounds a little bit yelled. I’m still curious to hear what she’d do with a different song style.
  • Simon obviously hasn’t heard this song, as the scat parts are against a guitar in the original.
  • “I hope that semi driver is voting for you.” “Yeah, I remember that chick, I totally hit her…”
    1. Amy Davis – “Where The Boys Are” – Wow, waaaaaaaaay flat. It’s not helping her that she’s singing a very slow song, with long drawn out notes. Not a very good performance.
  • “I’m going to say something positive. The camera loves you.” Obvious dodge to avoid criticizing the poor vocal.
    1. Brooke White – “Happy Together” – She’s bears a resemblance to Carly Simon, methinks. The beginning with just the guitar behind her sounds almost folk, but she sounds great front to back.
    2. Alexandréa Lushington – “Spinning Wheel” – Top notch. Looks confident and comfortable and his having fun with a great vocal performance with very few pitch problems.
  • Simon’s still watching some other show.
    1. Kady Malloy – “A Groovy Kind of Love” – Very pitchy. Not a great performance. Sounded constrained and nervous.
  • “That’s not what Paula said!” “Yeah, but it’s what she meant.” Uh, how do you know what she meant? :-P
  • Kady said she wanted to be more serious, but it sounded like she was holding back too much. She needed to relax a little.
    1. Asia’h Epperson – “Piece of My Heart” – Asia’h takes over the Joplin from Amanda, and sounds great doing it. The top 12 guys on the side of the stage are standing and clapping with the song. Best performance of the night so far.
    2. Ramiele Malubay – “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” – I don’t know this song to know if she’s on key, though it sounds flat in spots. She’s got a big voice, though, and sounds good over all.
    3. Syesha Mercado – “Tobacco Road” – Another stellar performance. Sounds a lot more confident with her abilities than many of the other girls performing tonight. Not sure about that last note on pitch, but great overall.
    4. Carly Smithson – “The Shadow of Your Smile” – I don’t know this song either. Sounds awesome though. Not much else to say.

I’m casting votes for: Alaina (3), Amanda (4), Brooke (6), Alexandréa (7), Asia’h (9), Ramiele (10), Syesha (11) and Carly (12).

Predictions:
Bottom three: Joanne, Amy and Kady
Going home:
Amy and Kady

See you tomorrow night for the results!
