American Idol 4/1 (Liveblogged!)

Dolly Parton mentors the Idols this week.

  • Ryan with the April Fool, announcing tonight’s show being pre-empted by a special Celebrity Moment of Truth featuring Simon Cowell. :-P Too bad, I wanted to see that.
  • Intro video for Dolly Parton and her work with the Idol contestants.
    1. Brooke White – “Jolene” – Couple of weird notes early, but sounds pretty good overall. Brooke is one of several contestants this year that are going to come out of “country week” in very good position.
    2. David Cook – “Little Sparrow” – I don’t know many Dolly songs, and this is one of many in that category. Doesn’t matter, though — David once again blasts one out of the park.
    3. Ramiele Malubay – “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind” – Dolly’s right that this was a good song choice for her, though it seemed pitchy to me. Sounds okey overall.
  • Apple Mac and PC ad with a yoga instructor who’s pissed off that Vista messed up her billing records. Awesome.
  • Jason has a stalker fan. :)
    1. Jason Castro – “Traveling Through” – a little more upbeat than previous weeks, while still clinging a little to ballad-with-a-guitar formula. Pretty good, though.
    2. Carly Smithson – “Here You Come Again” – Definitely less stressed and distracted than last week. Superb performance, best of the night so far.
  • I think Paula just… uh, yeah. :-P
    1. David Archuleta – “Smokey Mountain Memories” – Thought I heard a weird note, but it’s drowned out by an awesome performance if it was there to begin with.
    2. Kristly Lee Cook – “Coat of Many Colors” – Kristy had to be waiting since the beginning of the live shows for this week. Easily Kristy’s best performance so far.
  • Ryan makes an ass of himself in front of Vanna White. :-P
    1. Syesha Mercado – “I Will Always Love You” – I figured someone would do this song tonight. Syesha’s performance sounds like a blend of Dolly’s verson and of Whitney Houston’s version. Strong long notes float on the faintest edge of being off key, but stayed in bounds. Decent showing, and worth a vote.
  • Another hilarious Mac commercial. PC makes the “breakthrough” that his problems aren’t his fault, ’cause his parts come from all over the place, but then makes the leap that therefore everything is Mac’s fault. :-P
    1. Michael Johns – “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right” – Bluesy and rockin’. Sounds like a Joe Cocker take on the song. A+. Simon’s right, it’s his best showing so far this season.

I’m voting for: Brooke (1), David C. (2), Jason (4), Carly (5), David A. (6), Kristy (7), Syesha (8) and Michael for two (9, 9).

Predictions
Bottom three: Ramiele, Jason, Syesha
Going home: Ramiele

What’s your problem with Jason? Every week you have him in the bottom 3.

He does okay, but he doesn't really stand out. It sounds a lot like the same performance every week. Other people I thought did better have been eliminated the last two weeks, so there are fewer people to take the fall for him.

I thought it was “Smoky Mountain Memories” instead of “Appalachin?”

    Corrected.

Fortunately for Brooke, she's well liked and there were 3 performances that were worse than hers. Brooke completely missed that song. It's a song about a woman telling another woman to leave her man alone not sheepishly pleading with her. Where was the anger at the other woman for even trying? Brooke is just too nice to sing a song like this.

Ramiele was flat out boring. She sounded fine, but it wasn't exciting.

Kristy Lee was the same. Sounded fine, but was just uninspiring. I think she could've picked a number of Dolly Parton songs and done better than this.

Syesha did well on the "Dolly" part of the song. When she tried to go Whitney, all she proved was she could hold notes for a long period of time. As you said, it was borderline off pitch.

What's your problem with Jason? Every week you have him in the bottom 3. I was surprised last week, but he was much better this week, so he should be safe. Replace him with Kristy Lee, in my opinion. I also agree that Ramiele is done. It's sad that this wasn't "Country Week" because I would've loved to see Ramiele do something from Martina McBride because she reminds me of her (small frame, huge voice).

I thought it was "Smoky Mountain Memories" instead of "Appalachin?"
