American Idol 8 – Top 36 group two
Mar 3, 2009 That's Hot
A week late, a recap of the second group of 12 in the top 36 performers on American Idol 8. As I’m writing this, I have not yet seen any of the performances or results from last week. It’s obviously too late for me to vote, but I’ll note who I would have voted for.
- The judges have reversed their order on stage… I have no idea if this means anything at all.
- Hmm, may have been something about lighting and visibility, hints Simon.
- Quick intros of this week’s gang of twelve, and we’re off…
- Jasmine Murray (17, Columbus, MS) – “Love Song” – I like this song. Jasmine’s a smidge flat here and there, and isn’t very singing very strongly. There are parts early on where she’s almost not singing loudly enough to drive the microphone. Not bad, but probably will not make it to the top twelve.
- Matt Giraud (23, Kalamazoo, MI) – “Viva La Vida” – I want to like this, but there’s too much vibrato. It sounds like he’s gargling into the mic. Almost misses the high note in the middle. Not the best song for Matt.
- Jeanine Vailes (28, Washington, DC) – “This Love” – Waaaaaay pitchy. Not impressive at all… it sounds like a karaoke performance, and not a very good one at that.
- “How bad do you want it?” Dude, if she’d really wanted it, she’d have worked harder.
- Nick Mitchell (27, Brookfield, CT) – “There’s No Way… I’m Living Without You” – Based on his wardrobe before the commercial, I’d guess we’ll get Nick, not “Norman…” and I’d be wrong. Interesting performance… but not what I think we’re looking for on American Idol. He’s definitely a comic and a showman, but he’s not a pop musician, which is what the competition is all about.
- I think this might be the first time to my recollection that Ryan has stepped outside of his MC box and expressed an opinion about one of the performances. “Do I think you should go through? No, but I’m gonna give out your number.”
- Allison seems pretty nervous talking about the “Idol school” pre-performance.
- Allison Iraheta (16, Los Angeles, CA) – “Alone” – Good song, good song choice, and while she still seems a little hidden in her shell, I think this is the best performance so far tonight. Falling off some of the long holds, but good overall. I agree with Kara; she just needs to get comfortable on stage and be herself, and she can only do better.
- Kris Allen (23, Conway, AR) – “Man In the Mirror” – It felt like he was a tiny bit flat through it all, but not bad. Seems too safe to me… may not be quite the right song for Kris, but it wasn’t bad all.
- Megan Joy Corkrey (23, Sandy, UT) – “Put Your Records On” – Megan sounds very distinctive and different, though I don’t know the original song well enough to know whether it’s an attempt to emulate the original recording. I like this performance quite a bit, and she does really well with the range of both notes and dynamics. Great work.
- Matt Breitzke (28, Bixby, OK) – “If You Could Only See” – Started out well enough, but he almost seems too mellow in the middle section. Pitchy low in a few places.
- Jesse Langseth (26, Minneapolis, MN) – “Bette Davis Eyes” – Not a bad showing. Not the best tonight, and maybe not enough to get through to the top 12… but not bad. I thought the same thing Randy did — not a lot of range in this performance. She needs to expand a little.
- Kai Kalama (age, where) – “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted?” – I’d have liked to see some more individuality earlier on in the song, but he brings it at the end. A good performance overall. Not the best tonight, but good.
- Mishavonna Henson (18, Irvine, CA) – “Drops of Jupiter” – I was worried about her pitch overall, but not a bad show. She does do a good job of trying to make it her own… but it seems a little laid back.
- Adam Lambert (27, Hollywood, CA) – “Satisfaction” – Adam looks to be an early favorite. He’s got the voice and the performance chops, and his performance pretty much blows the rest of tonight’s field away. I agree (I think — can anyone else figure out what she’s saying?) with Paula — this dude can record now.
- Heh, interesting Randy mentioning Edward Cullen from Twilight in regards to Adam.
I would have voted for: Allison (5), Kris (6), Megan (7), Jesse (9), Kai (10), Mishavonna (11) and Adam (12)
Prediction
Moving on tonight: Allison, Megan and Adam
Results show recap coming up shortly…
