American Idol 8 – Top 13: Michael Jackson (delayblogged!)

American Idol’s first ever top 13 performs live tonight!

  • Weird voice-over dude announces the judges and Ryan. Apparently this was Simon’s idea?
  • As a consequence of adding an extra contestant, two will be eliminated tomorrow night.
  • Tonight’s theme: Michael Jackson.
    1. Lil Rounds – “The Way You Make Me Feel” – It could be an effect of the style she’s putting on it, but it sounds a little flat and almost a little behind the band… but I think it’s just my imagination. Gets stronger as she goes; sounds like an early winner.
    2. Scott MacIntyre – “Keep The Faith” – Scott gets to work with the piano this week. I don’t know this song, so the couple notes that sounded weird to me may just be the way the song works. Sounds pretty good to me. Simon’s got a point, though, that very few people will know the song.
    3. Danny Gokey – “PYT” – Danny’s got some moves in him, and they accent his performance pretty well, and he gets a smile from Simon when he calls back to the judges. Rockin’ performance, great job!
    4. Michael Sarver – “You Are Not Alone” – Couple of iffy notes… I’m not really sold on this performance. Not bad, but forgettable.
    5. Jasmine Murray – “I’ll Be There” – I liked this better than I did Michael’s performance, but she’s got the same problem: it doesn’t stand out.
    6. Kris Allen – “Remember The Time” – Interesting arrangement, with the guitar added to it; had a Maroon 5 sound to it — I like it. Not sure where the hell he was going with the notes during the runout at the end, but it was really good overall.
    7. Allison Iraheta – “Given To Me” – I’m not sure I know this song, either. Despite sounding like she’s yelling most of it, it sounds good, sounds rockin’. Allison has an Alannah Myles sound to her. I think she still needs some polish to her singing, but it’s a decent showing.
  • “Anoop Dogg”? Please, producers… don’t let this continue. Please.
    1. Anoop Desai – “Beat It” – I thought several times that he was going to go flat, but he kept up his pitch. Did sound a little behind in a couple spots early, but sounded just okay to me. Good, but not stellar.
    2. Jorge Nuñez – “Never Can Say Goodbye” – This is going to be like saying water makes things wet, but Jorge’s accent adds an interesting Latin twist to this song. I’m not sure it’s quite enough, though. Not very strong overall.
    3. Megan Joy Corkrey – “Rockin’ Robin” – After confirming with a friend that this was in fact covered by Michael Jackson in 1972, this is pretty good. Certainly a different way to go with this song, and definitely a distinctive version of the song.
    4. Adam Lambert – “Black or White” – I could have done without the screaming in the bridge…. seems like he was screaming practically the entire song. The judges seem to like him, but I’m not down with it.
    5. Matt Giraud – “Human Nature” – I was in to this performance until he hit the falsettos at the end… they kinda soured me on it after he was done.
    6. Alexis Grace – “Dirty Diana” – Sounds good. I like it overall, even though it sounds on the edge of being too big for her.

I’m voting for: Lil (1), Scott (2), Danny (3), Kris (6), Allison (7), Megan (10) and Alexis (36… yes, 36. :-P )
Predictions
Bottom three: Michael, Jasmine and Matt (if they call a bottom 4, then add Anoop)
Going home: Michael and Matt.

Tune in tomorrow night for the results!
