American Idol 8 – Top 13 results
Mar 12, 2009 That's Hot
A double-elimination faces the top thirteen, and a “new rule” comes into play…
- 33 million votes received, the most ever at this stage of competition.
- Ryan lists some names from Idol’s past: Tamyra Gray, Michael Johns, Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry. All names that, in fans’ opinions, left the competition too soon.
- New rule this season: “the judges’ save.” From tonight up until the top five, the judges can, only by a unanimous decision, save one competitor from elimination. This rule can be exercised once per season; thus, once they’ve decided to bail out one competitor once, they can’t do it again the rest of the year. When a competitor is saved, no one gets eliminated that week, but, much like tonight, two will go home the following week.
- Video package: the mansion the Idols will be staying in during the competition
- Group sing: the top 13 perform a Michael Jackson medley.
- I’m still not sure if we’re supposed to recognize the people in the “exclusive Idol moments” during the commercials. They’re good auditions; where are these people now?
- Video recap: last night’s auditions. I predicted Michael, Jasmine and Matt appearing in the bottom three (with Anoop joining them if they do a bottom four), and Michael and Matt going home.
- A few questions with the performers, followed by the Ford Music Video: “We Will Rock You”
- Here we go… Michael stands… and is safe. Allison is next, and is also safe. Jasmine follows them, but is asked to stand center-stage.
- Matt is called next, and tries to join Jasmine at center. Ryan sits him back down, he’s safe. Kris and Megan are asked to stand… and Megan joins Jasmine at center stage.
- One of these two is going home… and it’s not Megan. Jasmine is provisionally eliminated, pending discussion by the judges while she sings one more time.
- Following a huddle by the judges, Jasmine Murray is sent home, as her video package plays.
- What song is this “home sweet home” song that’s playing the departure video?
- Performance by Kanye West: “Heartless”
- What the hell is that one woman backup singer wearing on her shoulders? She looks like an enemy space ship from the original StarFox, or something…
- The appearance of fans standing behind the judges’ desk indicates they’ve disappeared for this performance… I wonder where to?
- Results resume… Scott is called up… and seated again, safe. Alexis is next up, and after being made to stew for a few moments, is also declared safe. Danny joins them.
- Anoop leans in the direction of center stage… “Go ahead,” says Ryan. Anoop is on the block.
- Ryan can barely be heard over the audience as he announces that Adam is safe. Jorge stands and remains standing while Lil stands. Jorge joins Anoop at center stage.
- The two guys are put on ice a little while longer, as Kelly Clarkson joins Ryan on stage for a chat before singing “My Life Would Suck Without You.”
- Anoop and Jorge are at center stage again. The lowest vote getter is… Jorge, who will sing again while the judges deliberate…
- …okay, not all of them are deliberating. Randy and Simon can be seen in discussion while Paula dances.
- Simon declares that Jorge Nuñez is going home.
- Ryan helps out with my earlier question: Carrie Underwood covers “Home Sweet Home” for the departure video packages this season. Thanks, Ryan!
The remaining top eleven compete again next week!
