American Idol 8 – Top 10: Motown
Mar 26, 2009 That's Hot
Two blog night? Isn’t that a band?
Having missed last night’s performance episode due to a poker game, tonight we’re blogging both the performances and the results. First up: Wednesday’s performance show.
- Tonight’s menu: the music of Motown.
- Alexis’s elimination was disappointing, but I wouldn’t call it shocking. I was hoping she’d go further, but the voters didn’t see it that way.
- Of course Simon will like this week a little better than last week’s show… Simon’s no country fan.
- Video: the fifty-year history of Motown Records, and the Idols tour Hitsville U.S.A.
- Motown founder Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson are both in the studio tonight.
- Matt Giraud – “Let’s Get It On” – I like this song to begin with, and Matt’s performance respects Marvin Gaye’s original while taking it in Matt’s own direction. Great performance to start the show!
- Kris Allen – “How Sweet It Is” – Two for two tonight — another great modern take on a classic song. Nice.
- Scott MacIntyre – “You Can’t Hurry Love” – I didn’t get into this one as much the first two, but I didn’t think it was as bad as Simon did, and I liked the faster tempo compared to the last two weeks. Scott’s going to continue to have his fans, but I think he’s starting to trickle down the rankings.
- Who is that back there next to the judges, stage Simon?
- HAH! Crayons and coloring books for Simon. Hilarious!
- Ohhhhh…. it’s Megan Joy setting up for her out-to-commercial shot. Speaking of which… what happened to her last name?
- Megan Joy – “For Once In My Life” – Back from the sick bed, Megan has pitch problems that are partially attributable to her distinctive style, but still leaves a bit be desired. Not her worst performance, I don’t think, but she’s done better.
- Megan seems to have the conceit that Simon wanted Scott to have, but I think it may be too much for the situation she’s in. “My fans are still there” could prove to be famous last words.
- Anoop Desai – “Ooh Baby Baby” – Anoop sings the verses pretty well, and tries to make the song his own a little, but he crawls back into his shell a bit when he gets to the chorus — the titular line seems reserved.
- Michael Sarver – “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” – Michael’s a little all-over with his pitch, including a pretty wild last high note. Not a good showing.
- Lil Rounds – “Heat Wave” – Lil’s a little pitchy, but she can sing. You can definitely hear her missing notes, then bending up to reach them. It’s just an okay performance for me.
- Adam Lambert – “Tracks of My Tears” – Waaaaay different look from Adam this week — he almost looks like a toned-down Elvis.
Either way, I like this look. This is a very nice and sweet version of this song, with a nice held out note that gets standing ovations both from Kara Dioguardi and Smokey Robinson. Adam’s still a frontrunner, if not the frontrunner, in this competition. - Danny Gokey – “Get Ready” – Even though he didn’t take Smokey’s suggestion about the background parts, Danny still does a great job with this song. It’s not his best, but it’s really good.
- Allison Iraheta – “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” – Hot performance. ’nuff said.
I would have voted for: Matt (1), Kris (2), Anoop (5), Adam (8), Danny (9) and Allison (10)
Predictions
Bottom three: Scott, Megan and Michael
Going home: Michael
Next up: results, Smokey Robinson, Joss Stone, Ruben Studdard and Stevie Wonder.
