American Idol 8 – Top 8: The Year You Were Born

A week behind again! I’ll have last week’s performances and results (My DVR only recorded half of the program), as well as tonight’s performances all up tonight.

  • One of my favorite themes this week: Songs from the year you were born.
  • What’s up with the bald dude up front?
  • Hah, the judges’ baby photos are hilarious. :-D
    1. Danny Gokey (4/24/1980) – “Stand By Me” – Who doesn’t know this song? This version is a little different, though – a disco-ish cover that Danny does really well. Good solid start to the show.
    2. Kris Allen (6/21/1985) – “All She Wants to Do is Dance” – Okay, the disco funk version worked for the last song, but I’m not feeling it for this one. It’s not a bad performance by any means, but I don’t know about the arrangement.
  • I’m definitely in line with Randy’s critique — I was listening to the band more than Kris.
    1. Lil Rounds (10/20/1984) – “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” – A technically good performance, but I didn’t find all that much different from the original Tina Turner performance. Really good, but karaoke-ish.
  • I’ve figured out why I like this theme — most of the kids are born in the 1980s, and I love ’80s music. :-D
    1. Anoop Desai (12/20/1986) – “True Colors” – Not bad. Maybe edging on forgettable, but not bad. Worth a vote, either way.
  • Uh oh. Simon has opened the door for antagonistic contestants. :-P
    1. Scott MacIntyre (6/22/1985) – “The Search Is Over” – Scott’s a little iffy on some pitches, and he’s having the same problem Lil did — this performance isn’t all that different from the original Survivor version, outside of a way-off high note near the end. Not his best showing.
    2. Allison Iraheta (4/27/1992) – “I can’t Make You Love Me” – Allison almost has the same problem, too, of sounding too like the original, but there’s just a little big of growl in it that adds some girl-rock feel to it. Not too bad at all.
    3. Matt Giraud (5/11/1985) – “Part-Time Lover” – Starts out way too slow, but quickly picks up the tempo. Matt’s performance is a good counter-example of where several of tonight’s performances fell short — he takes a song everyone knows, but puts a way-different spin on it, and does an awesome job.
    4. Adam Lambert () – “Mad World” – Adam’s performance got cut off on the DVR, but I got to listen to it on YouTube. He made an excellent choice to do the Michael Andrews/Gary Jules version of this song, as it’s much more his style, I think, than Tears for Fears. I still prefer the Andrews/Jules version to Adam’s, but he still does a good job.

I would have voted for: Danny (1), Anoop (4), Allison (6), Matt twice (7, 7) and Adam (8)

No predictions this week, as I watch the program already knowing who’s gone home.

EDIT before posting: As my DVR cut off half of the recording of the results show, I will not be able to blog it. Scott MacIntyre was sent home at the end of the evening.
