American Idol 8 – Top 6+1: Disco (Liveblogged!)

Can you smell the polyester? Here comes Disco Week…

  • Since they sent two home in the first finalist week by narrowing down to two pairs, and eliminating one from each pair, I’m going to predict a bottom four instead of a bottom three tonight.
  • No intro videos this week? Jumping right in…
    1. Lil Rounds – “I’m Every Woman” – Sounds rather sloppy to me, honestly… pitch is all over the place. I’ve heard way better from her.
  • “I do not believe I was karaoke tonight.” No, hon, frankly, you were worse. :(
    1. Kris Allen – “She Works Hard For the Money” – Whoa… I really like this arrangement immediately… a disco classic turns into an awesome Latin acoustic piece. Great work!
  • Uh… I think (Paula Translator working overdrive here) she meant that while women will often do songs originally done by men, not many men go the other way. I think. Maybe. I hope.
    1. Danny Gokey – “September” – Danny keeps his song a disco song, and does a good job with it. He expands the range of the vocals a bit, but keeps it pretty close to the original. Not bad.
    2. Allison Iraheta – “Hot Stuff” – Allison does a great job morphing another Donna Summer classic on the evening, this time into a grungy rock tune. The typical advice for the Idols is “make the song your own,” and she did.
    3. Adam Lambert – “If I Can’t Have You” – This man is still a finals contender. Excellent performance. Disco turns into an awesome ballad.
    4. Matt Giraud – “Stayin’ Alive” – Matt brings a Justin Timberlake-styling to disco standard, and it works for him. Good showing!
    5. Anoop Desai – “Dim All the Lights” – Anoop is constantly improving, and while I don’t think he’s going to make it all the way to the final week of the show, he does a reasonable job here. One weird note at the very end, but not bad.

I voted for: Kris twice (2, 2), Danny (3), Allison (4), Adam twice (5, 5), Matt (6) and Anoop (7)
Predictions
Bottom four: Lil, Danny, Matt and Anoop
Going home: Lil and Matt (I don’t think he deserves it yet, but I think it’ll happen)

The results, plus David Archuleta… tomorrow night.

Brian and I joke that it's "American idol starring Adam Lambert," lol. I think he's the clear winner. There's no one else in his league.

Yep. I love Cook so much!

Kris had a Santana feel to his arrangement and I loved it!
  • Yeah, that was pretty awesome. Some of the best performances every year come out when the contestants take a well-known song and turn the arrangement completely on end and take it in a new direction. David Cook was a near-master at that last year.
