American Idol 9 – Boston auditions (Liveblogged!)
Jan 12, 2010 That's Hot
It’s that time of year again, for commentary on American Idol. Let’s get the show on the road with tonight’s episode of auditions from Boston!
It’s hard to document what’s going on during the non-live rounds, as a lot gets edited out, so a lot of this is going to be just stream-of-consciousness until the live shows start in a couple months.
- How many people in Ellen’s audience thought she was joking when she announced she was going to be the new judge?
- Boston’s guest Paula: Victoria Beckham
- Janet McNamara’s taking the track that some NASCAR drivers take — practice your trade with the video game. Janet seems to have hit the wall, though, and hard.
- Hey cool, Paula’s back. At least, to Janet anyway.
- Maddy Curtis nails Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Easy in for the first golden ticket of the year!
- Dancin’ Pat Ford is a little, um, out there?
- Jennifer Hirsch, Claire Fuller, Jess Wolfe all impress.
- Amadeo DiRicco tries to be the first guy to win a golden ticket… and flies through with Simon’s favorite thus far.
- Gradjitating? Is that like graduating or gravitating?
- Derek Hilton’s first elicited response from Victoria says it all. Next.
- Mere Doyle hears the news she needs to hear, regardless of whether she believes it yet. I feel
- Luke Shaffer sounds great, as does Benjamin Bright.
- Andrew Fenlon brings the attitude up front, and not a horrible voice, but it’s obvious he’s adding an affect to it, and it doesn’t seem to get very far. He bristles against the judges immediately, and they don’t warm to him. Simon says he’s warming to him, and eggs him on against the other three. Fun moments at the end.
- Bill Bloom and Michael Ryan stun the judges into silence. and not the good way.
- Ashley Rodriguez sings really well, to the point of Randy making up numbers.
- Tyler Grady’s wrists are busted, but his voice isn’t.
- Day two starts with a history lesson.
- Lisa Olivero is all over the place with pitch, and Ryan Keane and others do no better.
- Mike Davis is confident, and for good reason, ’cause he’s got the singing goods. I think he asked Kara out during the whole thing.
- Katie Stevens blasts out one of my favorite songs. Strong voice for 16; I didn’t think they were going to ever cut her off for a minute!
- Joshua Blaylock has a good voice, but the judges try to get him to be a little more assertive first before they give him the ticket.
- Cool lookdown shot to see all the other stuff — cameras, microphones, lights — on the set. Little wonder contestants get flustered when they walk in.
- Justin Williams is a cancer survivor, making whatever he faces here a piece of cake by comparison. He’s got nothing to worry about, though, as his voice is amazing.
- Norberto Guerrero… “Should I try again?” “Sure.” Why are you encouraging him? You all know you’re not going to send him forward already. Cut him off and move on.
- Bosa Mora brings a big family with him, and though he doesn’t impress Simon (whose reaction seems to bring out the first hint of any antagonism from Victoria), the other three send him through to Hollywood.
- Leah Laurenti nails “Blue Skies” big. Like Kara says, she brings a lot of emotion into it and it works great.”
Tomorrow: Atlanta!
