American Idol 9 – Orlando auditions

The same day as a space shuttle launch, Idol’s next set of auditions took place in Orlando. How many standouts did we get?

  • Today’s guest judge is Kristen Chenowith, who’s an impressive talent.
  • Theo Glinton is, um, a little out there in appearance. I’ve heard way worse singers, but I wouldn’t say there is enough there to get to Hollywood. The judges wouldn’t say so either.
  • Ryan promises some outstanding talent coming up… I hope it’s coming soon. :-P
  • Heh, the lady judges seem to be having fun. :-D
  • Seth Rollins turns in an impressive audition on behalf of his autistic son. Easy ticket.
  • Jermaine Purifoy had auditioned two years ago and didn’t make it, but takes another shot here, and sings rather well.
  • Shelby Dressel sings through a birth defect that left a nerve on one side of her face undeveloped, affecting her smile. Doesn’t affect her voice all that much, and gets four yeses for the last audition of day one.
  • No guest judge on day two, as Kristen got called back to New York.
  • Jay Stone seems to beat box pretty well, but there isn’t much singing in it. He did bring a decent voice when he turned off the beats, and squeaks through in a split decision.
  • Janell Wheeler, Brittany Starr James and Kasi Bedford (with a slight rasp to her voice) all perform admirably and gain their golden tickets.
  • Cornelius Edwards sacrifices his anatomy, and his pants, for a three-yes performance. I think a producer tried to get him to split again. :-P
  • Two sisters, Bernadette and Amanda Disimone, each try to wow the judges, and they both have great voices. They both move on.
  • Jarrod Norell brings too much of an affect on his voice, and joins the immortal list of people who think they can start the audition over and win the judges over. When he refuses to leave until he gets in, he founds the immortal list of people who had to be led away from their auditions in handcuffs. I heard today he was only charged with trespassing.
  • Matthew Lawrence, on the other hand, is trying to recover from a previous stint in handcuffs, having held up a bank with a bb gun at age 15. Ten years later, he’s singing his way to Hollywood. As he leaves, Kara predicts a top 12.

Los Angeles next week!
