American Idol 9 – Hollywood Week part 2: group sing

The torture test of Hollywood Week: group sing, where someone else’s failure could doom you too.

  • 96 hopefuls remain as they separate into groups.
  • Many of the groups take on names, which is either going to make things easier to follow or just confuse the hell out of me. I’m not sure which yet. :-P
  • “The Dreamers” grew a little when two girls kinda glommed on to sing the same song. “The Mighty Rangers,” who all auditioned in Denver seemed to gel quickly.
  • “Phoenix” contains one member who did really well during group week last week, and tries to bring the group good luck by using the same rehearsal spot.
  • The two newer members of The Dreamers seem to be AWOL.
  • “Neapolitan” seems to be getting their moves mooched by another team, “Destiny’s Wild”.
  • After a little drama, The Dreamers keep their two new members, while Big Mike’s team, “Team Awesome,” gets to practicing, and finishes up quickly, so he can check in with his wife, still in labor.
  • Destiny’s Wild and Neapolitan look to be heading for quite the skirmish before this is all done.
  • After everyone finally gets to sleep, folks actually seem to be in good moods in the morning.
  • Mike’s wife is within a few hours of delivery, while The Dreamers are getting even more tense.
  • It’s a girl!!! :-D
  • First up, “Faith”: Charity Vance, Ashley Rodriguez and Michelle Delamor all get through with the first performance of the day.
  • Team Awesome (Michael Lynche, Seth Rollins, Tim Urban and, Michael Castro) perform “Get Ready,” though I don’t think I heard Castro sing. Tim and Michael Lynche move on.
  • Neapolitan’s Liz Rooney, Thaddeus Johnson, Jessica Cunningham and someone else get to do the Lady Gaga song first, and Destiny’s Wild isn’t happy about the apparent stolen arrangement. Nevertheless, all four go on.
  • Performing the same song, Destiny’s Wild (high-flying Todrick Hall, Theri, Jareb Liewer and Siobhan Magnus) step up with choreography and a strong showing of their own, though the final note sounds a little sour. All four of the group, while Ellen shows some concern, move on.
  • All of the members of the next four groups, going unnamed, move on as well.
  • The Mighty Rangers (Tori Kelly, Maddie Penrose, Mark Labriola, Kimberly Kerbow and Danny someone), split last night between sleep and continued rehearsal, split the same way at the end of the audition. Tori amd Maddie go on, while the sleepers go home.
  • Short one member who suddenly quit mid-morning, Phoenix (Ben Honeycutt, Jeff Goldford, Moorea Mesa and Jermaine Sellers) fracture in their performance. Jeff and Jermaine sounded great and move on, while Ben and Moorea missed words, fell apart and leave.
  • Several groups seem to flub Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape”, while one girl finally nails the chorus lyric.
  • Matt Lawrence and Amanda Shechtman in “Big Dreams” get cut short by the judges as the entire group goes home after their trainwreck of a performance.
  • “Middle C” (Janell Wheeler, Jermaine Purifory and Casey James) and “Three Men and a Baby” (Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, J.B. Ahfua and another) all move on to the next step.
  • The Dreamers (Mary Powers, Hope Johnson, Margo May, Alex Lambert and another) are the last group of the day, and seem to be headed to a crash landing. Mary didn’t sound too bad, but Margo completely missed her pitch. Margo and the fifth go home, the other three move on to the next day.

96 have been whittled slightly to 71, and one more make-or-break performance in Hollywood. More to come later in the week as I get caught up. :)
