American Idol 9 – Top 12 men

Yeah, I know, I’m getting further and further behind. I’m workin’ on it! :) In the mean time, here are the first live performances by the men this season.

  • “…This… is American– Simon, stop talking.” *snerk*
  • Randy says the girls “blew it out here last night,” but I thought they were just kinda okay. They were good, but not that spectacular.
  • Kara seems to be hanging on Simon’s every word… for some, bizarre reason. :-P
    1. Todrick Hall – “Since U Been Gone” – Wow, this is an amazing arrangement, first shot out of the box. I’m impressed. Todrick sets the “willing to play it safe” bar pretty high.
    2. Aaron Kelly – “Here Comes Goodbye” – Sounded good to me, though I don’t know the song. I can definitely see Simon’s comment that he doesn’t look confident on stage yet.
  • Aaron reminds me of a young Wil Wheaton. It’s mostly the face…
    1. Jermaine Sellers – “Get Here” – I can barely hear him at the beginning of the song; I don’t know whether he’s incredibly quiet or if he’s being mixed too quietly. He’s all over the place with pitch, too. I’m not sure he’s going to get the votes to stick around next week.
  • “Pay attention to your monitor, pretty boy.” Ryan’s and Simon’s antics resume in force. :)
    1. Tim Urban – “Apologize” – Tim was cut and got called back at the last minute the week before the show, and apparently didn’t even tell his parents, letting them find out on TV with everyone else! Tim doesn’t do too bad overall, but he’s pitchy in spots; a smidge sharp in parts of the verse and flat in the chorus — I’m not sure but what the “oh yeahs” in the second chorus weren’t improvised on account of missing the notes the first time through. Tim’s comeback is in danger of not lasting long.
    2. Joe Muñoz – “You And I Both” – I don’t know the song, but I think at least one note in the chorus sounded flat, but Joe recovers pretty well and doesn’t miss it the next time through. Overall a good performance; Joe should easily stick around next week.
    3. Tyler Grady – “American Woman” – The song is almost bigger than he is, but it’s an okay performance. Not great, but there’ve been enough other trainwrecks tonight already that he should stick around easily.
    4. Lee Dewyze – “Chasing Cars” – Caught a few pretty sour notes. It’s obvious he’s a good singer, but I think he was pretty nervous and unsure of himself, and I think he knew right away he’d missed notes. I hope he sticks around; Simon’s endorsement should help.
    5. John Park – “God Bless The Child” – Simon looks disinterested during the performance, and considering how “old-fashioned” the song is, I can guess why. Kara uses the word “loungy” to describe the performance, and it’s true.
    6. Michael Lynche – “This Love” – Michael had his guitar on stage, but I couldn’t really hear it over the rest of the band. One of the best performances I’ve heard all show, and an easy pick to move on.
    7. Alex Lambert – “Wonderful World” – This sounds very karaoke to me. I’m not hearing any personality in the song at all. He might survive this week, but I don’t see him in the top 12.
    8. Casey James – “Heaven” – Casey puts a sort of country feel on the Bryan Adams classic, and it sounds really really good. Another one of the best of the night.
  • They are reeeeeeally giving Kara a hard time. Too funny. :-D
    1. Andrew Garcia – “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” – Not a bad performance, but nothing stellar. Should get through this week, though.

I would have voted for: Todrick (1), Aaron (2), Joe (5), Michael (9) and Casey (11)
Predictions
Going home: Jermaine and Tim
